Frequently Asked Questions

How do I open my clipboard history?

On Mac, press Cmd+Shift+Control+Y (default shortcut) or click the SaneClip icon in your menu bar. You can customize this shortcut in Settings > Shortcuts. On iPhone or iPad, open SaneClip and use the History tab.

How do I grant Accessibility permissions?

SaneClip needs Accessibility access to paste content into other apps. On first launch or when you click Request Accessibility Access, macOS should prompt SaneClip directly. If macOS does not finish the request inline, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility and enable SaneClip there.

Where is my clipboard data stored?

All data is stored locally at ~/Library/Application Support/SaneClip/ (direct download) or ~/Library/Containers/com.saneclip.app/Data/ (Mac App Store version). If you turn on iCloud sync, record data is also stored in your private CloudKit container so it can appear on your own devices. If you also enable Pro history encryption, the synced record content is encrypted before upload. SaneClip does not send clipboard history to any third-party server.

Why does iPhone ask me to save copied content?

iOS does not let clipboard managers silently read everything you copy in the background. When SaneClip sees that the current iPhone clipboard changed, it shows a save card so you can explicitly add that current item to history. Mac clips that are already saved can still sync to your iPhone through iCloud.

Can SaneClip save several iPhone copies later?

SaneClip can import every item that iOS still exposes on the current pasteboard, including supported text, links, and images. If you copy one thing, leave SaneClip closed, then copy something else that replaces it, iOS only exposes the latest pasteboard contents. Use the save card, Share sheet, or Shortcuts when you want to keep an iPhone copy.

Why are Mac and iPhone behavior different?

macOS allows SaneClip to monitor clipboard changes while it runs, so Mac history can be automatic. iPhone and iPad require a visible user action for clipboard reads, so SaneClip uses explicit save, Share extension, widgets, and Shortcuts flows instead of pretending background capture is possible.

How do I save something from another iPhone app?

Open the Share sheet in the source app and choose SaneClip, or copy the item, open SaneClip, and tap the pending clipboard save card in History. The share extension supports common text, link, and image items.

Does SaneClip capture passwords?

SaneClip has built-in password manager detection. When enabled (Settings > Security > "Detect & skip passwords"), it recognizes the quick copy-then-clear pattern used by password managers and automatically removes those entries from history.

Can I exclude specific apps from clipboard capture?

Yes. Go to Settings > Security > Excluded Apps and add any app you want to exclude. Copies from excluded apps will not appear in your history.

How do I export or back up my data?

On Mac, go to Settings > General > Data to export or import your clipboard history as JSON. You can also export and import your settings from Settings > General > Backup & Restore. On iPhone and iPad, open Settings > Export Data or Settings > Import Data.

How do I reset SaneClip completely?

Quit SaneClip, then delete the folder at ~/Library/Application Support/SaneClip/. This removes all history and settings. Relaunch the app to start fresh.
